16 MARCH 2016 Sewer Line Rehabilitation Work Starts Up Monday

Clarksville Gas and Water sewer lateral line rehabilitation work is scheduled to begin for the year on Monday, March 19, in North Clarksville and is anticipated to be finished by late May.

The week of March 19-23, sewer rehab contractors will work on Storybook Drive and the following week, March 26-30, on Appleton Drive.

Weekly work schedules and locations will be announced to the public and posted on the Gas and Water website,

Contractors will also notify residents in the affected work area in advance either by letter or door-to-door visits of the type of work to be performed and the work schedule. If no one is home, an informative door hanger will be left.

Sewer lateral line rehabilitation is part of the department’s ongoing sewer rehabilitation program designed to provide citizens with a well-maintained and efficient sewer collection system.

14 MARCH 2018 Water Main Work May Cause Intermittent Water Outages for Warfield Boulevard Area

Work to take place nightly, Monday-Friday, March 19-23

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Clarksville Gas and Water has planned intermittent water outages on Warfield Boulevard beginning Monday, March 19 at 10 p.m. for water main line improvement work in cooperation with the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) Warfield Boulevard/Highway 374 road widening project.

Construction crews will begin work nightly at 10 p.m., Monday-Friday, March 19-23, to complete water main connections at various locations along Warfield Boulevard.

The water main improvement work may cause water outages and low water pressure affecting several areas at different times during the scheduled work hours on Warfield Boulevard between Rossview Road and Shady Bluff Trail, Rossview Road from Jeffery Drive to New England Place and Jan Drive, Dunbar Cave Road and River Run Road including connecting roads and side streets to the aforementioned areas.

The nightly work is anticipated to be finished and water service restored each morning by approximately 6 a.m.

13 MARCH 2018 Cumberland Drive Road Closure Planned

Thursday, March 15, 2018, 8:00 PM

Clarksville Gas and Water has planned a road closure for Thursday night at 8:00 p.m. on Cumberland Drive between Washington Street and Crossland Avenue for water service line repair.

Southbound traffic will be detoured to Washington Street and Elder Street during the repair work.

Motorists are advised to slow down and be alert to directional signs, utility workers and equipment when approaching the work zone.

The water line repair is anticipated to be finished and the road reopened by approximately 1:00 a.m.

03 MARCH 2017 Clarksville Gas & Water launches ‘Pay by Text’
Cost-free service allows mobile payments

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Clarksville Gas and Water has launched “Pay by Text” as a convenient payment option for customers to pay their utility bill anytime, anywhere on any cell phone.

Pay by Text is a cost-free service that delivers registered customers a brief monthly text alert with the bill amount and due date. If a payment method is stored on the account, the customer can simply respond with “OK” to pay instantly. If no payment method is stored, the customer can click on the invoice web link to access a secure online billing portal to process payment. A confirmation payment receipt text message will follow.

Here are the simple steps to register for Pay by Text:

• Log In to your Gas and Water WebConnect account,, and select, “Make Payment.”
• Click on the “Home” button or “My Account” at the top right of the screen.
• Select “Pay by Text” and simply follow the instructions.
• Be sure to wait for the Registration Text Message on your cell phone to verify and complete.

Once registration is verified, monthly bill text alerts will automatically be delivered from “74121” and begin with the next bill. Standard data fees and text messaging rates may apply based on individual mobile phone plans.

“We are excited to add Pay by Text to our lineup of payment options,” Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan said. “We’re always looking for ways to use technology to make interacting with the City more convenient, and we’re especially happy that this service is available at no charge to customers.”

Pay by Text is powered by InvoiceCloud, Gas and Water’s secure online payment portal, and can be accessed online at Please look for the InvoiceCloud web address,, in the web browser to ensure you are on the secure bill payment site.

Legitimate third-party online bill payment services are available and some may design their home page to appear similar to the Gas and Water payment page, but customers should be aware that a fee may be charged and the payment does not post in real time. In fact, payments made though bill-payment services may take a few days to post to an account and possibly cause past due status, late fees or even service deactivation.

Dear Valued Customer:

Clarksville Gas and Water Department contractors will be in your area very soon replacing existing water mains to accommodate the road widening project on US41A/Madison St. As part of this project, Clarksville Gas and Water contractors will replace and reconnect your service line from the new water main to your new water meter and meter setter. The new replacement setter includes a check valve (backflow preventer).

When a backflow prevention device is placed on a water service line, the water that has been delivered through the customer's meter is prevented from returning through the meter to the water main, thereby preventing potential contamination of the water supply by cross connections. This creates a closed loop system within the customer's water system. This condition may result in a condition to the customer’s internal plumbing that is called “Thermal Expansion”.

What is Thermal Expansion?

Thermal expansion is an increase in water pressure due to heated water having nowhere to go in a closed system. When hot water is used it is replaced in the water heater with cold water. As the cold water is heated in the water heater it expands.

The closed system leaves little or no space for expansion. The result is a potential increase in water pressure that may damage water heaters, plumbing systems and fixtures.

What can be done about thermal expansion?

There are signs to look for to identify potential problems before more serious ones occur. Please learn the signs of thermal expansion from the list below.

Some signs of thermal expansion

  • The relief valve on the water heater drips during the recovery cycle. Hot water pipes make a creaking sound. 
  • There is a sudden surge of water when a faucet is first turned on, then the pressure drops. 
  • Premature failure of water heaters, plumbing and fixtures. 
  • Hot water in the cold water lines.

It is important to know that the water heater relief valve should not be used as a means of controlling thermal expansion. Instead, contact a plumbing professional if you suspect a problem. The plumber can schedule an inspection and install proper thermal expansion control methods.

Current plumbing codes require the installation of thermal expansion relief devices in "closed systems". The two most common methods are to install either an expansion tank, or a thermal device installed on the cold water line to the tank. We suggest you discuss the best solution for your needs with a licensed plumber.
